Fred Dalton Thompson (August 19, 1942 - November 1, 2015) is an American politician and actor who portrayed Ed Trudeau in Die Hard 2. Thompson, a Republican, served as a senator of Tennessee from 1994 to 2003. He had expressed interest in running for the office of the presidency and did so during the 2008 general election. However, he dropped out of the race after poor showings in the early Republican Presidential Primaries.

Career

As an actor, Thompson was in films like The Hunt for Red October, Curly Sue, the 1991 version of Cape Fear and In the Line of Fire. He also portrayed New York District Attorney Arthur Branch in Law & Order and it's various spinoffs.

On November 1, 2015, Thompson died from a recurrence of lymphoma at the age of 73.
