Los Angeles was founded by Felipe de Neve, Spanish governor, in 1781. It was incorporated in 1850. The city's longest serving mayor was Tom Bradley (who was in his 15th year in office when Die Hard was released). Under his rule, the city's ever growing population moved it from the 3rd most populous city, to the 2nd most populous city in the United States, surpassing Chicago.
Off-duty New York cop John McClane arrives in the LAX airport to go to Los Angeles to have Christmas with his estranged wife Holly Gennero and their kids, Lucy and Jack. Then he meets limo driver Argyle, who was sent by Nakatomi Cooperation to drive him to Nakatomi Plaza, which is where the remainder of the film took place.
