CIA agent Jack McClane was assigned to a three year operation in Moscow to get evidence against corrupt Russian Defence Minister candidate Viktor Chagarin who had his ex-partner, former billionaire Yuri Komarov, imprisoned without a fair trial. Jack killed Chagarin's associate Anton in the Russian nightclub to allow himself to be arrested to get close to Komarov.
John McClane comes to Moscow to help Jack after learning about his arrest.
